LIKES:[/b]
Inventing and creating things, taming/training dragons and learning more about them, Toothless the dragon, Astrid, Gobber (he is more of a father figure than his own father is to him), using logic, sarcasm
DISLIKES:[/b]
being compared to other vikings like his father, messing things up and failing tasks, the Viking expectations and demeanor, viking training, killing dragons and fighting dragons, landing himself in a fight or battle (because he is not exactly a good fighter), yak-nog, feeling awkward.
FEARS:[/b]
Toothless being injured or killed, being the village outcast, always making mistakes and slip ups that will cause others to disregard him, being an embarrassment to his father or others, not fitting into the norm, losing the dragons
PERSONALITY:[/b]
Hiccup has a dry and often sarcastic sense of humor and personality that doesn't always land him the best of friends at times. He can also be a bit awkward in behavior and movements, and it is clear that he doesn't always know what he is doing. Because of his lanky build and the fact that he hardly has any muscular strength or abilities, fighting isn't something he excels in. However, Hiccup makes up for this in his intelligence, and he is skilled in coming up with hand-made inventions and designs such as the tail wing he made for Toothless to be able to fly. He also tends to prefer plans, strategy and thinking things through over impulse when he can avoid it.
Hiccup can be "slightly" accident-prone, as shown when some of his inventions have gone awry and would often mean trouble for his Viking village. This had earned him the nickname "Hiccup the Useless" for the majority of his life.
HISTORY:[/b]
Hiccup was born and raised on the Island of Berk in a village of Vikings. His father, Stoik, was the Chief of the vikings, and so Hiccup was next in line for the title. Hiccup, however, was not the average viking and he constantly struggled with meeting his father's expectations as he grew up. He wasn't a good fighter, he was half the size of most teenagers his age and no where near as strong, and to top it all off he was quite accident prone. Wherever he went, disaster seemed to fall onto the village, caused mainly by his misfiring inventions and attempts to prove to his dad and everyone else that he could be a viking that he would be proud of. Hiccup ended up being trained as a blacksmith by a viking named Gobber while the other vikings were off fighting and defending the village from the fierce dragons.
Hiccup was still determined to become a true viking, and so he knew that to do that he had to kill his first dragon. One night, when the village was being engulfed in a war against the dragons as they tore across the skies, stole livestock and set fire to houses, Hiccup snuck off from his post in the blacksmith hut and ran to join in the battle. Of course, Hiccup was no fighter, and he knew that. So, instead of planning on fighting the dragons directly, he retrieved the invention he had been working on, which was a type of sling machine that would shoot them out of the skies. Here, he saw a dragon- the elusive and deadly Nightfury- and he fired his invention, managing to injure it and cause it to crash-land further off in the island.
He went off to go kill and retrieve his catch, but as he saw the dragon lying there, tied up and injured, he couldn't bring himself to harm it, and set it free instead. It was just trapped and afraid like he was, he had thought. The Nightfury had turned and looked as if it were about to lash out at him and strike, but then it fled, leaving Hiccup stunned and shocked, to say the least.
Hiccup went back to where the Nightfury had been, and he was surprised to see that it was still there and struggling to fly off. Hiccup discovered that the dragon could not fly properly because of the injuries it was given, and that the wing fin on one side of its tail had been torn off. Hiccup decided to help the dragon and came back several times to bring it food. The dragon gradually warmed up to him and became practically his shadow, and Hiccup named him Toothless. Through Toothless, he learned much about dragon's behaviors and that they were not as heartless and cruel as the Vikings had thought. After much work and several failed attempts, Hiccup invented a prosthetic tail fin connected to a saddle for Toothless to help him fly properly. The invention surprisingly worked, but only if Hiccup was on the saddle to operate it.
Hiccup was soon signed up for Viking Training along with the other Viking teens, and Astrid, the viking girl he had a crush on. The objectives were to fight dragons that were sent out into the arena, but Hiccup did not want to fight or kill the dragons, since he knew that there was no reason they should be killed. Instead, he used techniques and his knowledge of dragons from being around Toothless to get the dragons to stop attacking and to tame them.
Hiccup was soon regarded as a hero. The villagers had no idea how he was able to handle dragons so well, and neither did they know of Toothless, who was hidden away out of the view of the village. Hiccup didn't think of himself as much of a hero, and only wanted to learn more about dragons and be with Toothless. With every chance he got he snuck back to find Toothless to feed him, spend time with him and practice flying.
Everything turned to chaos when Hiccup was put in the arena for his final exam to face a fierce dragon; the Monstrous Nightmare. The whole village, including his father, was there to see that he killed it for good. Hiccup would have been satisfied with trying to tame the dragon, but the Nightmare wouldn't be tamed. It would have killed Hiccup instantly, but luckily Toothless had understood that Hiccup was in trouble, and had tore into the arena to fight against the dragon, saving the boy's life. The Vikings didn't understand that Toothless was not a savage dragon and that he had saved Hiccup. They would have killed him on sight, but when they found out that Toothless' natural sense of direction and instinct could lead them to the nesting grounds of all dragons, Stoik tried a different plan. He ordered the dragon to be chained up to a viking ship in order to guide their warriors to the nesting islands so that they could finally kill the beasts off for good. They would not listen to Hiccup's pleas or his claims that dragons had changed, and his father was more than disapproving of the dragon being his friend. Hiccup had to watch as they sailed off into the horizon with Toothless bound to the deck.
Hiccup wouldn't stand to let them harm Toothless and kill all of the dragons, and so he gathered up all of the Viking teens and with Hiccup's help, they were able to tame the dragons of the Viking Training arena and fly off towards the island. When they finally reached the shores, they discovered that a massive queen dragon lived inside the island, and saw the chaos breaking out as dragons everywhere fled and the vikings tried to launch a feeble attack. The dragon queen had been disturbed by the Viking's presence, and emerged in a furious rage as it destroyed everything in its path and sent the vikings scrambling for cover.
Immediately, Hiccup had raced to the ships to free Toothless, but the ship was hit and began sinking, nearly causing both of them to drown. When both of them had surfaced and took to the sky, he then devised a plan with the other teens to distract the creature by trying to find its weak points. It ended with the massive queen dragon flying after Toothless and Hiccup as they flew as fast as they could and then rocketed up into the clouded sky, where Toothless used his fiery breath attack to fire into the creatures mouth and ignited it into flames. The queen fell down in a blazing inferno and Hiccup fell off of Toothless' back straight into it. Toothless had dove down after him and sheltered him in his wings, saving Hiccup from what could only be a horrible fate in the flames. When Hiccup woke up several days later, he found that he had been brought back to his bed and that his foot had been lost in the accident, and replaced with a make-shift metal prosthetic foot that Gobber had crafted similar to his own.
